Human bodies come from organs, organs from tissues and tissues from cells. Cells are called the smallest building blocks of the human body. In the cell nucleus within the cell, there are thousands of genes that contain genetic information about the organism and which are double-helixed and all physical characteristics are susceptible to diseases.
DNA is also stored in units called filamentous fragments called chromosomes. The answer to the question of Down syndrome is hidden in these chromosomes located in the cell nucleus. There are a total of 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent and 23 from each parent (23 pairs). These chromosomes consist of 2 reproductive cells with 23 chromosomes immediately before fertilization of the mother and father cells with 46 chromosomes; But in chromosomal disorders, 46 chromosomes are divided into 24 reproductive cells with 22 chromosomes.
Cells with 22 chromosomes and 45 chromosomes with 23 chromosome cells cause another genetic disorder, while the answer to the question of Down syndrome is that the chromosomes with 24 chromosomes and the chromosomes with 23 chromosomes combine to form 47 chromosomes. Individuals with Down syndrome come to the world as 47 chromosomes instead of 46, unlike any other human being.
The condition due to the number of chromosomes is not a disease, it is only a genetic difference and is not inherited. In other words, a child with Down syndrome does not have a Down syndrome. Because it is genetics, it is not possible to treat it according to the conditions of today or to remove it completely.
The real cause was not found; But it is known that pregnancies over the age of 35 constitute a risk factor. In other words, women who are pregnant at older ages are more likely to bring children with Down syndrome to the world. The reason why young women are seen more often at birth is that younger women are more likely to become pregnant. The world is estimated to be an individual with 6 million down syndrome.
Although Down syndrome can be understood due to physical and mental differences, it is being tested for definite diagnosis. For this blood sample is taken, chromosome test is done and definite diagnosis is made.
In people with Down syndrome, mental development is slow and mental capacities and abilities are different from each other. However, quality of life can be increased by ensuring that they have the most capacity to use the training they have. They are also different from their physical properties. Metabolism can cause weight problems because they work slowly. There are physical features such as small and slanting eyes, flat nose and flat face, single and deep line in the palm, short fingers, curled little finger. They may also need physiotherapy support because of muscle loosening, called hypotonia.
Diseases in Down Syndrome
Individuals with Down syndrome are susceptible to some diseases. These diseases are the diseases that can be seen everywhere and the treatment is possible. Heart disorders, thyroid problems, weakness of the immune system, stomach and intestinal problems, hearing and vision disorders are common diseases in people with Down syndrome.
This is why it is recommended that parents have health check-ups of children with Down syndrome frequently. As the developing medicine is more effective in the treatment of diseases, the lifespan of people with Down syndrome is also prolonged. Experts say that these individuals expect to live an average of 50 to 60 years.
Down Syndrome Doesn’t Block Social Life
Slow mental development or a number of physical problems can no longer prevent individuals with Down syndrome from participating in life. This situation can be overcome by education and long roads can take place. However, the important point here is that the training should be started immediately. Training should begin at the earliest possible time without losing time, and should be continuous without interruption or disruption. With regular education, an individual with Down syndrome can learn to speak, write, read, take part in society and come to a level that he or she can self-fulfill. Educational issues also have important responsibilities for parents.
In this regard, an expert trainer should be trained in the trained field. These kind of trainings are given in special education centers and rehabilitation centers. In this view, the down syndrome can be confused without being deported, and the quality of life of both parents and children with Down syndrome is being raised.
